Current reliability ratings There are two main reliability reports for the auto industry: annual auto reliability brand rankings and J.D. Power’s U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. Consumer Reports The Consumer Reports annual brand reliability ranking is designed to show how well cars perform over time while also providing details about the likelihood that the owner will be affected by issues or required repairs. The yearly ranking includes an estimated reliability score for each vehicle, which is calculated on a scale from one to 100. The average vehicle rating in the annual report generally falls between 41 and 60 points. For a manufacturer to be considered to be ranked, Consumer Reports must have survey data for at least two models. The most recent ranking issued by Consumer Reports from February 2022 featured Asian car makers leading this group by significant margin. Asian automobiles have an overall reliability standard of 62, while vehicles that are made by European manufacturers are in a distant 2nd place with an overall average of 44. Domestic brands are in last place with an average score of 42. The top five most reliable brands in the 2022 Consumer Reports ranking are: Subaru Mazda BMW Honda Lexus If ranked by type of car alone (cars versus SUVs minivans and pickups Cars are found to be the most reliable in general. They have an average reliability score of 57. SUVs are second and have an overall score of 51. Pickups and minivans tie for last , with an average score of 43. When you consider domestic vehicles The rankings show that pickups and SUVs are more efficient in scoring 41 and 45 respectively. Domestic cars score lower at only 38. J.D. Power Now in its 33rd year, J.D. Power’s 2022 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems experienced by original owners of three-year-old vehicles. The evaluation covers problem symptoms in an extensive list of categories, including Exterior Driving experience Features Controls and Displays (FCD) Information and assistance for driving Seats Climate Powertrain Interior The J.D. Power Study was recently revised to include all the technologies and features that are available in modern vehicles. It now covers a few new problem areas and provides new information on customer expectations regarding deterioration, vehicle appeal and updates to software. The defunct J.D. The goal of the IIHS is to minimize the number of fatalities, injuries, as well as property damages caused by crashes. As part of that effort it conducts and publishes research on vehicle safety. Every year, the company announces it’s top safety Pick — the vehicles that perform best in evaluations. Its Top Safety Pick has been given since the model year. The IIHS has also published Top Safety Pick+ awards since the year 2013.
